Apathy
Alex: My original lyrics from the 90s were mostly about TV and how additictive it was to me and how I hated the way it stole my time. I repurposed the song to be more about social media and added some stuff like "we hide behind the photographs" which is a way of talking about the image we create to the world but the reality may be very different...and lonely. I also added that I'm unfortunately a part of this stupid algorithm now, although a very very very tiny part, but still. Anyway, apathy...yeah.
You are the image that you see
I know it’s cool to act so bored
Drown yourself in banality
You hate the things that you adore
I’ve had enough of irony
It makes me feel so incomplete
Attention is our currency
Doom scrolling is just a streak
Life’s so much better on TV
Let’s stay inside and watch some more
Here we are now older and lonely
The entertainment was a bore
We hide behind the photographs
We were caught up in the aura
Fun is a weary kind of laugh
And there’s nothing new I knew before
The sun is shining but I can’t see
A reason for my Apathy
Reading too much into things
But at least it passes time
I’m split into pieces
Swept up by the algorithm
In too many places now
To even care
