Maybe This Time
Alex: This song is kind of a companion song to Spotlight (on Fade Away). There’s two things here. One is: I couldn’t imagine being a woman and having society constantly pushing me to find someone and be social. As a complete introvert, that would be devastating. The other thing: I was a young dude once. I was not always forthcoming with women I dated. In my experience they were looking for a mature relationship and I maybe presented that way, but was looking for um…other things? I mean pizza! Definitely pizza….
So the song is kind of about how (especially early in life) guys are kinda jerks. Well, at least I was. And how a good human being has to keep cycling through immature guys until she finds one that isn’t. And I don’t know why my two songs (Spotlight and this one) which put forth that a woman has to generally overcome patriarchy and be very strong in our society seem to be my most poetic lyrics? I doubt this song will resonate much (considering my audience metrics tell me I’m 80% male listeners), but I genuinely think this song and Spotlight are some of my best lyrics in terms of cadence, word choice and theme.
She takes the lid off the box
Afraid of what’s inside
Letters that she never sent
Pages filled with good intent
And love
How many times she asks herself
Until there finally is no doubt
She cries softly to the sound of rain
All she ever wanted was someone to hear her song
But the world has gone deaf
They can’t hear anymore
Maybe this time
This time she says
And time is a tricky thing to hold on to
And she feels the weight of tomorrow’s pain
Tonight she’ll take enough to smile
Surrounded by the faces of denial
The faces of her past
In the old photographs
She knew they were all hiding behind masks
All she ever wanted was someone to hear her song
But the world has gone deaf
They can’t hear anymore
Maybe this time
This time she says
All she ever wanted was someone to hear her song
But the world has gone deaf
They can’t hear anymore
Maybe this time
This time she says
Things will be different
She slips into bed
She turns the light off
She hides her head
Just like a child
She’s dreaming of sunshine
She’s dreaming of sunshine
