Alex: This was written shortly after arriving at college (go Terriers!) It’s just a simple lyric about coming to terms with everything being different, and missing that comfort level you had of all your friends back home, family, your home, etc. It eventually passes of course. If you are handed lemons you make lemonade, what do you make with L’s? “Getting out of bed most days” is a nod to Dinosaur Jrs “Thumb”. I loved the line J Mascis wrote because it implies there are some days he doesn’t get out of bed at all!
Lost my way out here on the road
Chasing my dreams, dodging my shadows
The city lights don’t let me sleep
A couple of nightcaps for the company I keep
Always thought there was a purpose
Now I’m not so sure
Hopeful I’ll find some meaning
Getting out of bed most days
I see you there when I’m dreaming
The warmth of the sun on my face
I’ve had enough of these dirty walls
It’s time I come home
Life didn’t hand me lemons
It simply handed me L’s
Not much I can work with
Just trying to keep afloat
Feeling a bit high and empty
Muster up the strength to try
Looking back to where I came from
I’m dying now to come back home
I see you there when I’m dreaming
There’s warmth there and sun
I’ve had enough of this life out here
It’s time I come home
