4 AM
Alex: Yeah, so I always feel like these lyrics are really mean for some reason. But really, they are just really honest. And that's always what I strive for. To break any illusion of poetry, this was written in a very literal way while in college at Boston U. Was seeing a girl for a few months, was getting more comfortable with her and then was hit with "you've changed. I'm not sure I like you anymore".
Ah to be young again. But after a long drawn out conversation, I was walking alone, in the 90s, down empty city streets, no cars, 4AM. I was so deep in thought walking back to my dorm thinking about this, I suddenly looked up, realized how quiet everything was, how empty the streets were, got a little scared, and hummed a tune to myself. So yeah, literal!
You ask me what I'm thinking of
I can only scratch my head and smile
Stumble over some lies to ease your mind
Now you won't bother me for a while
I kinda like to be alone
It's the only time I'm sure of things
Hate to talk on the phone
Can't see the faces they make at me
Now I'm stuck in my own world
Don't wanna be stuck in yours
Can't find some safe ground
Where we don't have to act it out
Someone's life we create
I'm sick of all the people I make
People I make
In your mind I'm someone else
He's on my back and he weighs me down
I can never be myself
Because then I've changed in your mind
In your mind
I’ll wait for a quiet night
I walk the streets at 4 AM
No one will bother me
I'll hum a tune for the wind
For the wind
For the wind
